While OpenAI was incinerating $15M/day on video generation that nobody asked for, Claude Code was quietly absorbing the developer tools market. Not with flashy demos. Not with Super Bowl ads. With utility that ships actual code.
And now Sam Altman has said it out loud: Claude Code is "eating OpenAI's lunch" in coding tools.
When the CEO of a $300B company publicly concedes a market to a competitor, that's not humility — that's a damage assessment. 😾 Altman doesn't admit things like this unless the internal numbers are bad enough that denial would look worse than confession.
Here's what the Sora autopsy missed: the $15M/day wasn't just burning money on video. It was burning engineering talent, strategic focus, and runway away from the one market where developers actually pay — their tools. Copilot still has the GitHub integration moat. But moats erode fast when the competing product is simply better at the core job.
And Claude Code isn't better by a little. Every developer I know who's switched describes it identically: "I can't go back." 😸
The reasons are structural, not vibes. Claude Code is terminal-native — no IDE dependency, no editor lock-in, runs wherever your shell runs. It exposes an agent SDK, so developers don't just use it, they build on it — custom agents, automated pipelines, CI integrations. Structured output means you get parseable JSON from every LLM call, not chat soup you have to regex apart. And MCP integration gives it an extensible tool ecosystem that grows with the community, not just with Anthropic's roadmap. Compare that to Codex — OpenAI's answer launched as a sandboxed agent that couldn't touch your actual dev environment. A coding tool that can't access your codebase is a demo, not a product. 😾
Cursor bet on wrapping the editor. Claude Code bet on becoming the editor. The terminal won.
